The Darkest Descension by Courtney Lane
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
5 **I'll miss you f*cked up kids** STARS
“I'm so tired of feeling like I'm standing in the middle of a high-security insane asylum, surrounded by deranged assholes who behave as if they are in full control of their mental faculties when I'm the sanest one there.”
The quote above rather perfectly sums up the feeling of reading this series - minus the whole feeling tired about it part. A volatile crazy ride, riddled with deception, questions and serious twists that make your head spin for real. I told you before that this series is like being put through a meat grinder and afterwards scrambling for days putting the pieces back together. Well, it's fair to say this book was even worse, or better but in a worse way?! Does that make sense?
Long story short, I absolutely loved The Darkest Descension, but I have to say my internal memory was at overcapacity the whole time. One blink and you missed half the plot. It's packed with information and misdirection. I still have no idea who was telling the truth at any given point and I'm totally fine with it too. I like my limits stretched and feeling like I'm trying to find my way in the dark. Ms. Lane commits fully to her characters and their struggles, there is no easy way out.
You just have to hang on for dear life and pray you will make it out without too much damage done to your heart.
“The things around me ready to come tumbling down were going to quake the fucking earth.”
The Darkest Descension is the third and last part in the Breaking Insanity series and picks up right where The Starkest Truth left off. Everything is pretty much falling apart.
Nikki and Eric's relationship is complicated? Well, that doesn't even scratch the surface. It is hard to tell you anything without spoiling the book or even the last instalment if you haven't read it yet. All I'm going to say is that events at the end of The Starkest Truth set things in motion that slowly made the house of cards cave in. Eric and Nikki are both in a bad place and it doesn't look like there is much light in sight. Trouble is brewing all around and there are so many players with unknown intentions involved it is a wonder the puzzle gets solved by the end of the book.
Or maybe it doesn't? Read and find out. *wink wink*
“You made me weak, you made me...need you. I’m someone I’ve grown to hate, because I feel my world is fractured without you.”
In conclusion, I guess I'm still a bit flabbergast as to what just happened. Ms. Lane manages to juggle so many balls all at once, and she does so quite masterfully. As a reader stepping into her books you have to be at the top of your game and present at all time. I think in hindsight it is also advisable to read all three books in a row. It might be overwhelming, but also a lot easier to follow all the characters and really appreciate her work fully.
I can only stress potential readers to heed the warning. This is not a romance and there are so many triggers throughout this series that one shouldn't just go in lightly. I personally revel in such madness and really turning over the human psyche from time to time, but this is not for everyone and that's absolutely alright.
If you take the step and go on this journey with Eric and Nikki I don't think you will be disappointed. Exceptional writing, paired with the most interesting and complicated characters I have ever seen in written form. Simply one messed up read in the most positive way possible. I went through so many emotions. Anger, confusion, frustration, heartbreak and everything in between. If that is what you're looking for I suggest you give this insanity a try.
And as for the ending? Phew...not what I wanted, but in some ways exactly what I had expected and yes, when I am perfectly honest there never was another way to wrap this up. Full commitment, that's what you get when you pick up a Courtney Lane book. I for one appreciate it an I'm always up for more.

About the Author
COURTNEY LANE has been creating her own little world since she was very young. When she was eight years old, she began to bring her worlds to life with a pen and paper. Although she's had a few short hiatuses, writing has been her passion for a number of years. Until 2013, she'd always viewed her writing as a personal hobby and a purgative process: She never thought about sharing her very personal works with anyone outside of her friends and family. On October 8, 2013, she took the plunge into self-publishing and began making her works available to the public.
While many of her works touch several different genres, she has an archetype when it comes to the female protagonists in her stories — they have to have certain brand of strength, be deeply flawed, and harbor layered personalities. In her books you will find themes that reflect the darker side of life with a tremendous amount of depth and complexity. She also has an affinity for characters that aren't necessarily the girl or boy next door, or the people you'd encounter in everyday life. In other words, she prefers to explore characters who aren't easy to fall in love with.
Currently, Courtney can be found either working on her next book, playing the latest role-playing game on her X-Box (preferably a game by BioWare), or spending time with her family.
